Are You Financially Literate
Are You Financially Literate Are You Financially Literate? Are You Financially Literate?A recent study broke down financial literacy into five key concepts that people needed to understand in order to be considered financially literate.Financial literacy is important. Without it, people are more vulnerable to bad credit, financial scams, payday loans, no credit check loans, and other things that can threaten financial health. But according to the National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), only 63 percent of Americans are financially literate. Do you know where you fall?Generally speaking, financial literacy is the ability to use your skills, knowledge, and financial resources to make good financial decisions and effectively manage your money. In order to do this, you need a firm grasp on certain financial concepts. The researchers behind the NFCS identified five key concepts to help them evaluate the financial literacy of their participants: compound interest, loan terms, inflation, risk and diversification, and interest rates and bonds. In order to be considered financially literate, participants needed to have a basic understanding of four or more concepts. Letâs take a look at each of these concepts in more detail.Compound interest.Compound interest is a percentage that is added to a principal sum of money and its interest as it accrues over time on a deposit or a loan. In other words, it is interest on interest. Say you have $100 in a savings account with an interest rate of two percent that compounds annually. That means at the end of the year, you would have $102, and the next year, interest would be calculated on $102 instead of the original $100 deposit. By the end of the second year, you would have a total of $104.04, even though you didnât add any more money to the account. Itâs kind of like magic!Thatâs the difference between compound interest and simple interestâ"simple interest would only be calculated on the principal amount, or $100 in our example.Even though a two percent interest rate seems sm all, you can see how it can add up over time into something more significant. Because of this, compound interest can be your friend or your enemy. Sure compound interest is great when it comes to your savings account, but itâs not so great when the sum of money in question is a debt with the potential to grow, such as an installment loan.Thatâs why itâs important to have a solid fix on compound interest. It can not only help you decide what kind of savings account is best for you, but it can also help you compare financial products, like personal loans, bad credit loans, and credit cards, and understand their real cost over time. Two loans could be for the exact same amount for the exact same length of time, but if one uses simple interest and one uses compound interest, one will clearly cost you less in the long run.Loan terms. When you take out a loan, you agree to a set of conditions, including the amount to be borrowed, the interest rate, and the term of the loan, or how lo ng you have to repay the loan. One key aspect of financial literacy is understanding how the term of your loan affects the size of your payment. This concept goes hand in hand with the concept of interest, which we just discussed.Letâs say you want to take out a loan for $1,000, and you get to choose between a term of one year or two years. Which option would result in a smaller monthly payment? That would be the two-year term, since you are spreading the same amount of money over more months. A one-year term would be about $83 a month, while a two-year term would be about $42 a month.Who wouldnât choose the two-year term, you say? Well, unfortunately, things are rarely that simple. Interest is always a factor. Consider what would happen if your $1,000 loan came with a five percent interest rate that compounded annually. The longer your loan term, the more you would pay in the long run, even with smaller monthly payments.Inflation.Inflation is the rate at which the costs of good s and services rises over time. In other words, it affects the purchasing power of our dollar. Back in the day, there used to be something called penny candy because itâ"you guessed itâ"cost a penny. (Look, itâs even in the dictionary!) Even the cheapest of todayâs candy costs more than a penny. Thatâs inflation. Many people think a certain amount of inflation is a sign of a thriving economy but that too much inflation is cause for concern, since that would massively devalue the dollar. Inflation is something that our government (the US Federal Reserve, specifically) tries to regulate at around two percent a year. That doesnât always happen, and the average inflation increase since 1921 has actually been 3.26 percent a year.Inflation of more than two percent but less than 10 percent is called âwalking inflation,â and itâs considered to be not great but manageable. When interest rates increase to the 10 to 20 percent range, itâs called ârunning inflationâ and can cause big problems, especially because incomes donât automatically rise with inflation.Inflation can also be different depending on what youâre talking about. For example, housing costs may rise over time at a different rate than food costs. One key thing to think about is how inflation might affect you over the course of your lifetime. Letâs think about that savings account again and the purchasing power of the dollars inside of it. What if the interest rate of your savings account is 2 percent, but the average annual inflation rate is 3 percent? In 10 years, will your savings have more, less, or the same purchasing power as it does now? The answer is less. And if you donât even have a savings account and your $100 is instead tucked away in a sock drawer earning 0 percent interest, your dollarsâ purchasing power would be even less.Risk and diversification.Risk is a term that is used in investing as a way to characterize a financial decisionâs degree of uncertainty and/o r potential for loss. The higher the risk, the greater the degree of uncertainty and the potential for loss. Investors generally donât make risky decisions unless the potential payout it great enough to justify it. Ever heard of the phrase âhigh risk, high rewardâ?For ordinary people, the most likely place they encounter risk is when it comes to their retirement account, which is usually made up of a portfolio of different types of investments. Accounts with a wide variety of assets are less risky than those with few. This is called âdiversification.âLetâs say you come into $1,000 and decide you want to invest it. Youâre deciding between (A) putting it all in the stock of one rising-star tech company or (B) contributing to a portfolio that will invest portions of the money in dozens of different assets, including the tech companyâs stock. Sure, if you go with option A, that tech company could take off and your $1,000 could turn into $1 million. Or it could go bankrup t tomorrow and you could lose everything. If you go with option B, the majority of your money is still safe in other assets.Interest rates and bonds.A bond is a type of investment in which you loan an entity (like the government or a company) money to be paid back at a fixed date (aka the âmaturity dateâ) with a fixed interest rate. Itâs kind of like the tables have turned, and instead of, say, owing to the government on a $1,000 student loan, it owes you on the loan.Governments and companies sell bonds to investors when they are trying to raise funds, and investors know exactly what the maturity date and interest rate are when they buy themâ"they do not change over time. And that brings us to a key takeaway when it comes to financial literacy: The value of a bond fluctuates depending on what the prevailing interest rates are at any given time. More specifically, as interest rates rise, bond prices go down. The opposite is also true.Improving your financial literacy. Now that youâve read this post, youâre financially literate, right? Well, maybe. According to this recent Bloomberg article, achieving and maintaining financial literacy is difficult. Itâs not something you earn once and keep forever. In fact, experts think that financial literacy is something that requires constant practice, which is not something average people have the opportunity to do. After the College Visit
What To Do After a College Visit College websites, brochures, and catalogs offer lots of information, however, nothing beats the insight you can gain from stepping onto a college campus. Last week, we shared our top dos and don'ts to make the most of your college visits. But, what happens once youââ¬â¢ve come home from your visit? Following your campus visit, write a note to each college representative you met. In addition to thanking these people for their time, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to reference a specific aspect of your tour or information session as a way of reinforcing your enthusiasm about the school and keeping your interest fresh in their minds. It is best to email these notes, because youââ¬â¢re more likely to get a response this way. Once you have made initial contact, aim to keep in touch again before sending your application. This is a great way to pose any questions that you wish you had asked during your visit or ask any new questions you may have upon further research. Next, review and expand upon the notes you took during your visit while details are still fresh in your mind. Update your research notebook and take the time to reflect on your impressions of the schoolââ¬â¢s three Cââ¬â¢s ââ¬â Classrooms, Campus, and Community. If you still have trouble picturing yourself at a school after visiting, then perhaps it doesnââ¬â¢t belong on your list. These notes will be useful as you write your essays and prepare for interviews, and will ultimately help as you decide where to enroll. Finally, talk it over with your parents. The alternate perspectives and useful suggestions that a parent can offer on a city, location, or school may surprise you. Also, the more included your parent feels in the college admissions process, the more likely he or she is to listen to your opinion when it comes time to make your final college choice. Although it is ultimately your decision on where to attend college, it is important to have open conversations about your priorities and whether a school is going to be a good academic and social fit. Now is the time to prepare for college visits for President's Day Weekend and spring break. A Discusion of Two Documentaries, Awaiting for Men and...
This essay attempts to discuss on two documentaries, Awaiting for Men (2007) and Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997), on their reconstruction of truth and reality with particular emphasis on cinematic language and representation. With documentary becoming more diverse and diffused due to advanced technology such as the Internet, the realism of first-hand experience and facts may be exaggerated and even fictional. This is achieved through a bombast proximity and truth which has caused a blurred definition to term documentary. With the understanding that documentary is a form of factual representation, the aim for ââ¬Ëtruthââ¬â¢ in the presentation of ââ¬Ërealityââ¬â¢ may be impossible (Chapman, 2009). Hence by comparing with reference to Awaiting for Men (2007) and Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997), it would provide a deeper analysis in distinguishing whether the two documentaries were able to represent the ââ¬Ët ruthââ¬â¢ of the reality. Firstly, one need to be aware the reality of the society that each of the documentaries have constructed in order to gain a better insight to why these documentaries were produced. Awaiting for Men (2007) presented the life of three strong and independent African women; an intimate conversation with the women focusing mainly on their timeline as a woman in Africa ââ¬â from a young adult woman to a married life. In Africa, it is perceived to the world that African women are conserved, dependent on men and

The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Gilman - 2024 Words
Matt Kellner Anthony Burns 1302 ENGLISH 2 May 2015 Losing My Mind ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠by Charlotte Perkins Gilman was written in the late nineteenth century. In the time of the late nineteenth century, hysteria, ââ¬Å"which is a psychological disorder when the persons symptoms covert from psychological stress into physical symptoms, selective amnesia, shallow volatile emotions, and overdramatic or attention-seeking behavior.â⬠(Hysteria biography) Has also been defined as, ââ¬Å"a state of mind, one of unmanageable fear or emotional excessâ⬠(Hysteria biography). The Discover of Dietary Vitamins
Vitamins are a 20th-century discovery. While people always felt properties of some foods were important to health before the opening decades of the 1900s, it wasnt until after the turn of the century that these factors were identified and synthesized. Discovery of Vitamins as a Factor In 1905, an Englishmen named William Fletcher became the first scientist to determine whether the removal of special factors, known as vitamins, from food would lead to diseases. Doctor Fletcher made the discovery while researching the causes of the disease Beriberi. Eating unpolished rice, it seemed, prevented Beriberi while eating polished rice did not.à Hence, Fletcher suspected that there were special nutrients contained in the husk of the rice removed during the polishing process that played a role.à In 1906, English biochemist Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins also found that certain food factors (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals) were important to growth in the human body: his work led to his receiving (together with Christiaan Eijkman) the 1929 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In 1912, Polish scientist Cashmir Funk named the special nutritional parts of food a vitamine after vita, which meant life,à and amine from compoundsà found in the thiamine he isolated from rice husks. Vitamine was later shortened to vitamin. Together, Hopkins and Funk formulated the vitamin hypothesis of deficiency disease, which asserts that a lack of vitamins could make you sick. Specific Vitamin Discoveries Throughout the 20th century, scientists were able to isolate and identify the various vitamins found in food. Here is a short history of some of the more popular vitamins. Vitamin A (a group of fat-soluble retinoids, including retinol, retinal, and retinyl esters)à ââ¬â Elmer V. McCollum and Marguerite Davis discovered Vitamin A around 1912 to 1914. In 1913, Yale researchers Thomas Osborne and Lafayette Mendel discovered that butter contained a fat-soluble nutrient soon known as vitamin A. Vitamin A was first synthesized in 1947.à Vitamin B (known as biotin, a water-soluble vitamin that helps the body convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy)ââ¬âElmer V. McCollum also discovered Vitamin B sometime around 1915ââ¬â1916.Vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine, a water-solubleà B vitamin that plays a critical role in energy metabolism) ââ¬âCasimir Funk discovered Vitamin B1 (thiamine) in 1912.Vitamin B2 (also known as riboflavin, an important role in energy production, cellular function, and metabolism)ââ¬â D. T. Smith, E. G. Hendrick discovered B2 in 1926. Max Tishler invented methods for synthesizing the essential vitami n B2.Niacinââ¬âAmerican Conrad Elvehjem discovered Niacin in 1937.Folic acidââ¬â Lucy Willsà discovered Folic acid inà 1933.Vitamin B6 (six compounds which are extremely versatile and primarily work on protein metabolism)ââ¬â Paul Gyorgy discovered Vitamin B6 in 1934.Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, required for the biosynthesis of collagen)ââ¬âIn 1747, Scottish naval surgeon James Lind discovered that a nutrient in citrus foods prevented scurvy.à It was re-discovered and identified by Norwegian researchersà A. Hoist and T. Froelich in 1912. In 1935, Vitamin C became the first vitamin to be artificially synthesized. The process was invented by Dr. Tadeusz Reichstein of the Swiss Institute of Technology in Zurich.Vitamin D (promotes calcium absorption in the gut and enable bone mineralization)ââ¬â In 1922, Edward Mellanby discovered Vitamin D while researching a disease called rickets.à Vitamin E (important anti-oxidant)ââ¬â In 1922, University of Californi a researchers Herbert Evans and Katherine Bishop discovered Vitamin E in green leafy vegetables.à Coenzyme Q10 In a report called ââ¬Å"Coenzyme Q10 - The Energizing Antioxidant,â⬠issued by Kyowa Hakko USA, a physician named Dr. Erika Schwartz MD wrote: Coenzyme Q10 was discovered by Dr. Frederick Crane, a plant physiologist at the University of Wisconsin Enzyme Institute, in 1957. Utilizing specialized fermentation technology developed by Japanese manufacturers, cost-effective production of CoQ10 began in the mid-1960s. To this day, fermentation remains the dominant production method around the globe. In 1958, Dr. D.E. Wolf, working under Dr. Karl Folkers (Folkers leading a team of researchers at Merck Laboratories), first described the chemical structure of coenzyme Q10. Dr. Folkers later received the 1986 Priestly Medal from the American Chemical Society for his research on coenzyme Q10. Source Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Fact Sheets. Western Civilization Essay - 1433 Words
Western Civilization: Beginnings to Present Although Western culture has been defined by both Christian and secular values across the course of time, the Westââ¬â¢s primary goal is to achieve economic supremacy, using Christian and secular philosophies, as well as colonization and technological innovation as means to achieve this goal. Of the features that define western culture, the most unique is democracy. Originating in ancient Athens, democracy created a sense of pride in oneââ¬â¢s government which, in later centuries, would evolve into nationalism. In Athens, democracy allowed the people to have a say in their government, furthering the unification of their empire and thus strengthening it. Out of this democratic world came many of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This however ended as Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity in the fourth century A.D. As emperor Constantine saw that it would be more beneficial to stop persecuting the Christians and accept them to avoid another civil war, he became a Christian. This was only the start as Christianity spread throughout the European continent and Emperor Theodosius established it as the official religion of Rome in 380. This proved especially beneficial for the empire as it allowed Rome to be governed during its greatest extent. When Rome official fell in 476 to the barbaric tribes of the Germanic region, Christianity was the uniting factor as the chaos of local groups sought to hold power. Out of this developed a complex feudal system comprised of lords, vassals, and serfs along with the power and wealth of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church demanded enormous amounts of money from the people as they sought redemption in times stricken with the Black Death and famine thus allowing the monasteries to emerge as the source of riches and the Church as the largest landholder in all of Europe. As the Churchââ¬â¢s power grew towards the first millennia, and had sucked the wealth from nearly all of its local citizens, they desired to find the holy land.
